Connecting Synnch to Xero
How to authenticate your Xero account, grant permissions, and understand what data Synnch reads from Xero.
1. Overview
Synnch integrates with Xero to help you import payroll and financial data for R&D expenditure tracking and reporting.
The integration is read-only:
- Synnch reads selected data from Xero
- Synnch does not write back to Xero or change your accounting records
This integration supports a structured workflow where projects, activities, time and evidence can be linked to expenditure.
2. Connect Synnch to Xero
To connect your Xero account:
- In Synnch, go to Settings or the Expenditure Workspace (you may be prompted to connect Xero).
- Click Connect to Xero.
- You will be redirected to Xero to authenticate.
- Select the correct Xero organisation (if you have more than one).
- Review and approve the requested permissions.
- You will be redirected back to Synnch.
If you manage multiple entities in Xero, ensure you connect the correct organisation before proceeding.
3. Login to Synnch with Xero
If your Synnch user is set up to use Xero authentication, you can log in via Xero:
- On the Synnch login page, select Login with Xero.
- Authenticate in Xero and select the correct organisation.
- You will be redirected back into Synnch.
This only controls authentication. It does not automatically configure expenditure mappings.
4. Sign up to Synnch using Xero
If you do not yet have a Synnch account:
- Select Sign up on the Synnch login page.
- Choose Sign up with Xero.
- Authenticate in Xero.
- Select your organisation.
- Complete setup in Synnch.
Once created, you can proceed to mapping employees and expense accounts in the Expenditure Workspace.
5. What Data Synnch Reads From Xero
When connected, Synnch can import:
- Payroll data (where available)
- Employee salary / base rate information
- Profit & Loss expense account data (for selected accounts)
Exact availability depends on your Xero configuration and whether payroll is enabled.
6. What Synnch Does Not Do
Synnch will not:
- Create or change transactions in Xero
- Post journals
- Modify payroll
- Update accounts, contacts or settings
- Push data back to Xero
The integration exists to support R&D expenditure tracking, not to operate as an accounting system.
7. Next Step
Once connected, proceed to:
Mapping and managing R&D expenditure from Xero
This is where you map payroll employees and expense accounts, and choose how costs are allocated across projects.
